Die Fledermaus
Dear Carl Rosa 6th December 1999

Just a line to thank you for your two recent productions. I enjoyed The Mikado very much, as always especially Bruce Graham.

As for Die Fledermaus: I have enjoyed at least eight different versions of Die Fledermaus/Rosalinda - about 4 on the stage (one open-air), 1 on LP and 3 on television, but I promise you that your version which I saw at Woking and again at Richmond was easily the best, the singing, the costumes, the orchestra, even the acting, were all perfect. And the singing in German with explanations in English, just right.

Thank you very, very much,

Dear Mr Mulloy 14th January 2001

On Sunday 7th January, I was in the car listening to GMR when I heard you on the Nick Robins programme. I have never seen any opera and am ashamed to admit that I have only been to the theatre a handful of times in my entire life. I was, therefore, fascinated by what you had to say about the The Mikado and thought it sounded brilliant and not at all what I expected opera to be.

On arriving home, I paced nervously around the kitchen before “confessing” to my wife that I really needed to see this! At first she thought I’d been to the pub rather than catching up on some work at the office. I then set about trying to find someone to look after the children before taking the plunge and booking the most expensive seats in the theatre.

My wife and I had a superb time and found the whole production to be most enjoyable. We particularly like Eric Roberts as Ko-Ko; he really is very talented.

I guess that the only problem with going to something so good to start with, is that everything else after will seem poor by comparison.

Diane and I would love to see another production by your company and will watch the Lowry newsletters with interest. Best of luck with your overseas tour and thanks to everyone for a great afternoon.

Yours sincerely

Dear Mr Mulloy 13th January 2001

My wife an I went to see your Mikado production at Salford Lowry Centre last Thursday and were so utterly delighted by the show I wanted to send our appreciation. One could not conceive of a more brilliant production. Staging, costumes, sets, singing,
stagecraft. . . all superb. And it was so rewarding to know that this was a faithful reproduction of the original as devised by Gilbert. I do not believe that every G&S production should follow tradition, or creativity is stifled . . . but it was so good to see an authentic production, as Gilbert intended it to be.

Have you any plans to produce Patience!? I think that is a gem, and an authentic production would be a true delight.

Thank you again.
